My MLB tour/roadtrip to Maine

Step 1: Why?
Combining two bucket lists into one: visiting all 50 states in the U.S. and visit every MLB stadium. Crossed off 6 states in New England which now puts me at 48 of the 50 (New Mexico & Alaska).

Step 2: When?
Juggling over a dozen different MLB schedules in late July, I wound up attending 8 games at 8 ballparks in 11 days. The Phillies gifted me a surprise double-header - ended by a walk-off Grand Slam - and I attended the Fenway tour, but unfortunately no game.

Step 3: Where?
Starting from Circle City - also visiting Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.

Step 4: How?
Using Hotels.com, HipCamp, Google Maps, Trip Advisor and the Ballpark app. I drove, camped, disc'd, fished, cheered & jeered, went sight-seeing & wondering & touring & exploring, slept in the car & hotel & tent & friend's house, and had gobs of seafood & ice cream along the way.

My team is better than yours

The worst kept secret was released today: Indiana Hoosiers basketball is the top team in the land. Not only are they returning all 5 starters from last year, but Sheehey is the best 6th man in the nation and Yogi adds backcourt depth. Its an embarrassment of riches that wasn't exactly easy; Coach Tom Crean has pieced together a title contender in just 4 years after inheriting a program with 1 (former) walk-on.

IHSAA football sectionals begin this week, and look who is ranked #1... da Bears. Lawrence Central went to the title game in 2010 but lost to Fishers at Lucas Oil stadium while Mr Football Tre Roberson eventually took his talents to Bloomington.  QB Drake Christen leads the state's most prolific offense (42 ppg) while A-Rod and Isaiah Townsend own the run game and a solid D known for shutting-out opponents all season. Eyes will be on the sectional semifinal next week, where LC looks to avenge last year's loss to 2011 State Champ, Carmel Greyhounds.

Speaking of stout defense, Notre Dame has yet to allow a rushing TD this year as they sit undefeated in the BCS hunt. Their 6-0 record and top-5 ranking is boosted by downing three ranked opponents and could get better with wins @ Oklahoma & USC. Linebacker Manti Te'o is a Heisman contender and the other #5 leads the dynamic offense, even though veteran QB Tommy Rees has had to pick up Everett Gholston's slack a few times.

Pacers begin the season later this month with some unfamiliar faces, adding role players DJ Augustine, Ian Mahinmi, Gerald Green, Sam Young, as well as draft picks Orlando Johnson and Miles Plumlee. Some say the bench didn't really improve from last season, but the chemistry of the starting 6 (Hansbrough) strengthened, plus major improvement from George Hill and Paul George should compliment the frontcourt of Danny Granger, David West and Roy Hibbert, who signed a max-contract this offseason.

I am holding off on talking about the Reds until I've cooled off from their choke-job, but my headline still holds true unless you're a fan of SF, NY, STL or DET.

And finally the Colts. Yes, I'm still soaking in the victory over the Packers. All I can say is Andrew Luck is my hero. Other than that, ChuckStrong!

The Unstoppable Cuban Missile

The fastest thrower in baseball was officially named the Cincinnati Reds' closer on May 20th, the day of our our Lord Sun. After 28 innings thus far, he still hasn't allowed an earned run, only 9 walks, 50 Ks, a .57 WHIP, 5 saves and a perfect 4-0 record. Meet Aroldis Chapman.

Reds' Homer, BP top Dodgers

It had been 5 years since Cincinnati had even won a game in Los Angeles; Homer Bailey and Brandon Phillips broke that defeated streak Friday with 7 strong innings of 4-hit ball and all 3 RBIs powered by the second basemen.  Now, thanks to Joey Votto and Bronson Arroyo's heroics on Sunday, they have a series victory in LA. The MVP front-runner drove in three runs - including a go-ahead, opposite-field HR in the 6th - while starting pitcher Arroyo earned his 14th win, tying him with Chris Carpenter for 3rd-most in the NL. Speaking of the Cardinals, the Reds maintain a 3+ game lead over STL with 38 games remaining in 2010.

Ken Griffey Junior retires

The greatest baseball player of our generation has decided to hang up his glove and spend the rest of his days with his family. Junior, the son of former Indianapolis Indians and Cincinnati Reds slugger Ken Griffey Sr, first burst onto the scene in 1989. Twenty-two seasons later, with 13 All-Star appearances, 10 Golden Gloves, 7 Silver Slugger awards, 3 HR Derby championships and the 1997 MVP - he will go down in history as one of the greatest players ever, both offensively and defensively. His last hit was a walk-off single on May 20 and he currently sits 5th on the all-time HRs list (behind Bonds, Aaron, Ruth, and Mays).

Duke spoils "Hoosiers II"

Butler almost pulled off the greatest story of hoops history tonight. Gordon Hayward had 2 chances in the final seconds to win the National Championship for tiny Milan High...er, Butler. Not only did they have full support from nearly all of the 70,000 fans, it was the hardest fought game you could ask for. It's awfully tough to lose a game like that, especially as the home team (wearing road jerseys).
Reds kicked off the season opener in grand fashion today by getting stomped by MVP Albert Pujols and the St Louis Cardinals. The good news is that they're only a game outta first place.
Tiger Woods returns to golf this week at the Masters, a tradition like no other. This man knows a few things about storybook performances, except his mistresses are the ones getting paid for telling them.

Need an update?

here it is, quick & dirty...

Pacers fail to make playoffs. Bulls/Celtics was epic. Still got an awesome gf. Reds still suck. BFF moved to Guatemala. Vegas was fun. Colts draft was decent. New job @ Bella Vita. And lastly, Twitter sucks because a.) it doesn't work well with Firefox and b.) even when I click the "Remember Me" box it doesn't remember me! WTF?

I feel like ranting so here it is

Notre Dame football will always be on national TV in America and most people don't like it. You either hate em or love em. Without sounding like an obvious homer (South Bend is upstate, my parents are from Elkhart County), they ring true excellence academically... less than a handful of BCS schools can claim that (Stanford, Duke... UCLA?). Their definition of a student-athlete is so far beyond any BigTen or SEC school it hurts (Northwestern? Vandy?). They refuse to join a conference in football, so now you hate them more. Those cocky bastards. Then they got Bellicheat's former protègè and he eats a lot. A lot. And they haven't won a bowl game for a decade and a half. Nevermind that they were Vegas' underdog in 7 of those 9 matchups dating all the way to their back to back Cotton Bowl wins in '93/'94 . The Cotton Bowl, the 5th member of the BCS Series, which is IU football's next step, after they install new turf of course. And get a real Head Coach. Chances that will happen with a lame duck Athletic Director? I've seen a lot of chaos since being 22-4 and whipping Purdont, well actually since I was a rioting student the week Kent Harvey's arm was grabbed by Knight. Before then, being a Hoosier fan was like being a Pacers fan. Nowadays being a Pacers fan is the more humbling than Notre Dame's current plight. This was my team growing up... Reggie Miller posters wall to wall... wearing the shorts and jerseys to school... waiting for autographs after games. Today tickets are basically free and management has turned over for the first time in 24 years. I'm 26. I cannot recall the Hoosiers winning it all in '87 or the Irish doing so in '88 but I do remember the Reds sweep of Oakland in '90. Then there was a huge gap til 2007, when Colts clinched their first in Indy. But that made it even moreso rewarding as a fan, or fanatic in my case. A team that was 10 years removed from 1-15 turned into 3 straight years of being undefeated in November... Colts are synonymous with AFC SOUTH CHAMP, literally, they're the sole owner of such a title. Holy shit I can't wait to see Lucas Oil.

Josh Hamilton and Edinson Volquez - where are they now?

Last December, the Reds were desperately seeking a pitcher to join veterans Aaron Harang & Bronson Arroyo and young studs Johnny Cueto & Homer Bailey in the starting lineup. They also had a plethora of talent in the outfield; Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey, Jr covered the sides while Norris Hopper, Ryan Freel and Josh Hamilton rotated in and out of centerfield all season - all while Jay Bruce (OF) had just won Minor League Player of the Year. Then this happened.
Edison Volquez Josh Hamilton SchrockStar §Hamilton currently has 58 RBIs (1st), 14 HRs (2nd) and 72 hits (1st) while Edison Volquez leads the majors with a sick 1.31 ERA and 76 Ks (62 innings). It's too early to tell who got the better end of the deal, but it's clear both teams have vastly improved by addressing their biggest need(s). What do you think? Ah-ha... jk!

my only Reds post '07

Ken Griffey Jr - SchrockStar §
I haven't spoken here much about the Reds, but they deserve a 20-minute blogging. First off, I want to thank them for providing the smidge of interest I still have in baseball... Yankees/BoSox don't do it for me, I'd rather go to a bar and watch it.
► Secondly, Griffey had his best year (30 HR, 100 RBI) since his Reds debut campaign in '00. No player in baseball is more loved than Junior, and I couldn't be happier he's a Redleg.
► Finally: Phillips, Keppinger, Encarnacion and Votto shone bright as infielders plus Hamilton and Bruce in the OutField and I can be renewed again as a fan. Hopper and Dunn will be the weak joints but the Big Red Machine could come alive. Of course, that also depends on who will be in the rotation w/ Arroyo and Harang (Shearn? Belisle? Bailey? Cueto?) to get us into the playoffs. Remember, the Reds play in the shifty NL Central where division winner takes league crown too. As long as they're improving the front office and roster, things are good.

Veteran OFs + talented IFs + 2 Aces + 2 closers = World Series

Anyone who watches baseball knows the Reds bullpen needs improvement; will 2008 be the year?

Lucky Stars for IU & Colts, Pacers plight

We finally have proof that cheating occurs and an embarrassed David Stern will still be commish after this. Big Market players and teams will still receive special treatment like a BigTen home game and the half-empty arenas will resemble high school-ish atmosphere. At least Conseco was trying when they ran their extended promotion last season making general admission $4.

David Stern NBA fix
It's becoming miserable to root for my Pacers now, something I've never felt in my lifetime. As a lazy Reds fan, I'm used to it. But I no longer have my 4 die-hard teams, and as they say, some of my childhood is gone. I have a single piece of memorabilia at my crib, a J-O coozie. Conversely, I have over a dozen each Colts/Hoosiers/Irish gear...
Can we attribute the downfall starting with Larry (as owner, not coach)? I suggest we trade J-O for multiple draft picks & Ben Wallace. It's not a fix-all, but it's the best path back to Title Contender, as long as Donnie's calling the shots again. Paxson and Skiles would love J-O and the Bulls can certainly afford to donate draft picks - they don't need any with that roster. Also, I'd be able to heckle Wallace up to 41 times for $4/game.

The § Mid-Summer Recap

This was supposed to be a vacation, yet I wasn't able to sleep-in once this past week. Starting with a spur-of-the-moment road trip (is there any other kind?) with Nate, I was promptly issued a speeding ticket in a Work Zone. Then our plan of sneaking alcohol into the stadium was thwarted when we discovered you cannot buy liquor in downtown Cincinnati unless you cross the river over to Kentucky. Since we had already parked and began drinking, this was not an option. We decided to chug as many beers as possible to reach maximum intoxication by 7:05pm. Then one fairy hobo told us about a super-secret, foreigner-owned cigarette shop (is there any other kind?) a few blocks away that sells hard alcohol. We then scalped a pair of 4th row seats behind the Reds' dugout. I had large pockets, so security didn't bat an eye as I snuck in the fifth of Early Times. Just after we arrived at the stadium, we purchased 2 large Cokes and poured out half, mixing in the tasty bourbon whiskey. One sip and I already determined I was gonna end up heckling one of the Reds players by the end of the game. I expressed hope that Juan Castro was playing, but I settled with berating SS Alex Gonzales instead. Fortunate for us, there were two cute co-eds sitting beside us. Unfortunately, their dad was in between us and them. At some point, we grabbed the lead vs. the World Champion Cardinals, but alas the eighth inning was bound to arrive and the Reds bullpen surrendered their characteristic meltdown by a rookie pitcher. We did not stay for the fireworks.
On to Mt. Adams for more drinking, which is very easy to find if you just drive UP. We mingled with strangers til closing time, then we sat on some steps observing domestic violence between white trash: the dude karate-kicked his girlfriend and she dropped in the middle of Main Street clutching her abdomen in the fetal position. This was comedy. Some time later, I saw a gangly fellow with a cowboy hat on and a babe on his arm and said aloud "That guy looks like Homer Bailey" to which his response was "That's the name on my license!". Nate told me to go talk to him, but all I could think about was how I wish that was Junior instead of Homer.
I spent most of Saturday fighting off the hangover, until I was picked up by a Hummer full of college friends and taken to Deer Creek. We chased tequila shots with Heineken in the VIP lot until we heard Ben Folds begin to play. Again I snuck in liquor, but when I awoke Sunday AM I found a full flask of vodka, a sure sign of browning-out. The John Mayer concert is VERY fuzzy, but I did not lose my phone or get arrested, so it's a win in my book.
Tuesday night was a subdued night with Fam as we watched fireworks over the lake. Yawn.
Wednesday morning I drove down to Bloomington and picked up Shemmer (and lots of beer). We met up with Darren & co. on Lake Monroe and wasted away the holiday in party cove. As I was lying on a makeshift raft amongst best friends and beautiful girls while clutching a cold brew and peeing at the same time, I thought to myself "life does not get better than this". I will not mention the part about how someone decided it would be funny to jump off the speeding boat when the rental was already past due, because some people were not as drunk as others and it was not funny to them...
Speaking of, I had to high-tail it back to Indy that evening for Mags' party on Geist Reservoir. My breathalyzer said I was okay to drive, and I felt fine - albeit exhausted. I showered and grabbed a 12-pk of Corona before arriving at the Daniels/Krull joint-party just before sunset. There were very few faces I recognized, but plenty of entertainment. The rapport I built that night led to an invitation to a weekend getaway in Brown County. I was lucky enough to arrive earlier than most, thus securing a bed at the private cabin in the middle of Indiana's most famous State Park. Friday night we played many drinking games (everyone had beer but me). I do not remember the name of the exact game, but I was 'assigned' 12 drinks, so I was forced to chug my vodka on the rocks. Later, I recall answering the question "Are you drunk?" with "No, but I'm about to pass out". With no hangover the next day, I was more than happy to go hiking and canoeing and swimming and all that fun outdoorsy stuff, but the sun's rays were brutal and I eventually found myself watching Wimbledon; all I can say is "wow". There was much more partying that night, but because I'm sworn to secrecy I cannot divulge exactly what took place. Let's just say it was more fun than I had expected. There is no doubt I will be returning to the Aynes House in the future.
Stay tuned later this week for a recap if this is successful.

I got a feva

I've decided I'm following this team til the end no matter how they finish. They deserve most of the admiration I give, and for that I'm finally grateful. They can compete for speed, defense, depth, HR power and now show 2½ reliable SPs. Fix that bullpen and set sights on Pennant (and pray Junior doesn't keel over from... whatever ails him).
It's wedding season and spirits are higher than usual. The best stuff in life is that which can't be prescribed. If this is global warming, I'm all FOR it. Someone just popped the champaign, gotta run.
